John mentioned it yesterday and today the article was posted by my friend Veronika Freeman of Dotcalm – Google wants to make sure your pages are loading smoothly, and quickly…

How Google Measures Page Speed

…there are two primary ways Google will measure page speed:

  1. How a page responds to Googlebot
  2. Load time as measured by the Google Toolbar

In December, Google added a page speed report to Webmasters Tools in the “Labs” section. The report shows how fast your site loads, specifically calls out several pages on your site, and offers suggestions to improve page speed.

What does this mean for us – Google is trying to improve our experience on the web, it shouldn’t effect too many sites. But if you know you have a slow site, it could effect your ranking. So speak to your designer/programmer if you think your site might have an issue and discuss some options.
