Making Time for Joy!

I’m a business woman, a graphic designer, then a blogger. There are other things in between, and even in front of those three things, but that’s the mind set I was in as I attended the Blissdom Conference 2012 two weeks ago.

As a business woman I know I need to have a “return on my investment” or an ROI to spend a full three days away from my desk. Especially if it’s going to be fun!

So I prepped for weeks before the conference;  made sure my online presence was polished, ordered new business cards and worked hard to finish every project on my desk.

I had a plan to meet every sponsor, attend the BEST sessions and exchange as many cards as possible…sounds relaxing doesn’t it?? Well to me, it SEEMED like the best plan to leave with every bit of new knowledge I could squeeze into my brain.

But once I arrived, I realized I needed an adjustment.

I attended a session that spoke to my heart. The speaker Alli Worthington made a case for “making time for joy”

It’s her SECRET TO PRODUCTIVITY.

Alli has five young boys, is a serial entrepreneur, and the founder of Blissdom. So if she has figured out the secret to productivity, I was all ears!

This is what she said;

“As entrepreneurs, we are conditioned to seek financial opportunities.”

Therefore everything we do comes under our “is this a way to make money” radar especially as creatives!

“That part of your brain? It needs a break.”

“Here’s why –

PAID PASSION equals PRESSURE

PRESSURE dilutes JOY

DILUTED JOY = unhappy {lemonade stand} or whatever your business is..

You deserve joy. Are you making time for joy? It’s worth it.”

I loved the session. It is so easy to fall into the “financial opportunity” trap.  I realized as I made my preparation for Blissdom – I had left out the JOY because I was under the pressure of seeking a “return on my investment.”

I needed to focus on being a blogger, designer, and let the business woman take a break!

Because in the long run, letting that part of my brain rest for a time, will pay off!

THANKS for the reminder Blissdom!
