Children’s Book Illustration and Formatting for Self-Publishing
CLIENT:
This author-client contacted us for information about formatting a children’s book from the story he had written about a family adventure. The story takes place in our local community, so it’s extra fun to work on this project and discover more about our wildlife in this beautiful area of Middle Tennessee.
PROJECT SCOPE:
He was already working with a young illustrator and hoped we could give her some assistance in preparing the art. We were able to meet with the young artist and she did a great job of sketching out concept drawings for each page. It was decided that our team member Kayla would do the final digital art for the book.
Mr. Thomas had shared his manuscript as a digital presentation with the words and a description of his vision of the artwork carefully laid out. This “storyboard” worked well along with some photos he’d taken to give us the details for creating the images.
Kayla began the illustrations with digital line art of each drawing which was then approved by the author. The art was drawn on a tablet synced to a computer. She used Adobe Photoshop to build each page of art. The artwork was drawn to the final page size of the book, with an additional 1/2″ for bleed on each side. As each final image was placed into the book the interior bleed is removed to keep it from overlapping the text page.
Once the author approved the line drawings, color was added to each image and sent for approval once more. With the final images prepared, Kayla began formatting the actual book in InDesign. The interior is one file and we create the cover section all together, the back, spine and cover together, plus bleeds of .125 on all sides.
The author chose to use Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and we assisted in preparing his account with all the self-publishing details he needed. The book will be available on a print-on-demand basis, which saves the author the huge cost of printing and storing books on his own.
