“A Beekeeper’s Diary Self-Guide to Beekeeping” was selected for an Independent Publisher’s (IPPY) 2021 Bronze Award in the home and garden category. IPPY is a well-respected book award program that brings attention to university and independently-published English books from around the world.

A Beekeeper’s Diary

Client:

Charlotte Ekker Wiggins is a beekeeper, author and gardener. Her one acre, award-winning Missouri limestone hillside garden, where her neighbors said nothing would grow, inspires her books. She featured how she developed Bluebird Gardens April 2019 in her TEDx “why bugs matter.”

She is a frequent lecturer and coach. Charlotte keeps native and honey bees, mostly outdoors.

The Book:

“A Beekeeper’s Diary, Self-Guide to Keeping Bees” is a helpful reference and workbook for anyone thinking about, and starting to, keep honey bees.
The combination of beginning beekeeping book and handy check lists will guide a beginner’s decision-making process. Hopefully it also makes the decisions process kinder on their wallets.

Approved by Great Plains Master Beekeeping Program, the diary is recommended for use with classes in the first three years of learning how to keep bees. The book also stands alone for those who don’t have easy access to a beginning class and want to get started on their own.

Project Scope:

Charlotte and I spoke in August of 2020, she was a frustrated author, trying to self publish for the first time. She had someone help her get her book on KDP but the end result was not what she had envisioned and she pulled it down. We were able to step in and redesign the book. Charlotte asked for us to remember the average age of the user is 50, and it’ll be brought right outside to the bee hives, so make the font larger than normal! We build a brand for this book that will carry through the next two books we’ll be working on in 2021.

She published using IngramSpark and KDP. Because the book is a very complex design, with photos, tables and lists we used KDP’s Kindle Create to build the eBook. The PDF is converted into a Print Replica eBook. Print Replica eBooks maintain the look of their print editions and offer many of the advantages of standard Kindle eBooks, but they do not allow the reader to resize text and are only available on certain devices. It does the book to have a table of contents and add interactive content, such as audio, video, images, and hyperlinks.
