Lesson #2 – You CAN move a business!

By September 7, 2011July 11th, 2014The Business of Graphic Design

In 2009, my husband and I decided it was time to leave New York. We had both lived there all our lives, but it was time to go where we felt God had directed and encouraged us to go – Tennessee. There were many reasons to leave, but most of them centered around being closer to our kids and getting out of Syracuse winters!

But of the many reasons to stay was my graphic design business – my clients were all around the central New York area. I had spent 17 years building the business, networking, establishing my name in the area. How could I move the business?

Now that we’ve been here two years, I can say it has been successful! Here are some things which have made it possible.

  1.  Communication – I spent a year prepping my clients. I asked them directly if they would be willing to continue working with me if I left New York. I was very clear about the reasons we were leaving and asked their opinion of how we could continue a successful relationship. I was very pleased to hear positive responses each time and some great ideas! I also made it clear on my website how to reach me and where I’m located now.
  2.  The Internet – my business is especially suited for long distance business relationships. I use the internet to upload images to the printers, communicate with my clients and seek new business. I already had several clients in cities in New York who I’d never physically met, we do business through email and the phone, so it was just taking virtual business relationships one step further to no longer be in the same state.
  3. Great clients! – without my loyal clients, I’m sure it wouldn’t have been as easy to move! I appreciate all the clients I have that have been willing to continue to work with me.
  4. Social Media – Skyping with clients brings me right into their office. Facebook page and this blog keep the communication lines open and gives me an opportunity to display my portfolio.

Moving a business across the country took planning and preparation, but it’s worked for us thanks to the technology we embraced. In the future I’ll have to discuss how I packed up my office and kept the business operational through the whole process. THAT was fun!! 😉
